Non-Credit Course Description
For those of you who want to know how to effectively fundraise for nonprofits, especially in an economy where competition is keen for every philanthropic dollar and donors are demanding more transparency and accountability, this is the course for you. You will learn which solicitation methods are the most cost effective, and how to design a strategic development plan that will attract and retain donors. You will also learn how to use tools such as donor management systems, volunteer-recruitment matrices, return on investment worksheets for special events and a host of other resources.

Who should take this course?
This course is for junior and senior college students from any discipline who are interested in learning more about nonprofits and fundraising, as well as members of the community who wish to hone their skills and broaden their networking circles.
Upon successful completion, students will receive a certificate and will be granted 3 CEUs.

Joy Simpson is a fundraising professional and a Certified Fund Raising Executive with 25+ years experience in all aspects of development, including annual campaigns, capital campaigns, major gifts, planned giving, grant writing, special events, public relations and communications.  Additionally, Joy is an adjunct faculty member for the College of Charleston’s Master of Public Administration Program teaching its Fundraising and Marketing for Non Profits and Transparency and Accountability courses. She served for nine years on the board of the local chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and served as chapter President in 2007.

John Brewer is the Director of Agent Development for Carolina One Real Estate in Charleston, SC. His passion centers on helping business professionals grow their businesses and improve their lives. John started teaching in 1991 and for the next 12 years he lived his calling as a high school teacher, coach, and eventually as an elementary school principal. In 2002, John made a career change into residential real estate where he enjoyed guiding homeowners through the process of selling and/or buying a home. While he enjoyed the successes of a real estate career, John was thrilled when the opportunity to help real estate agents build their business presented itself. Today, John is a Certified Ninja Selling Instructor and spends his time coaching and developing professionals to help them improve how they run their business which leads to an improvement in their lives. Barbara Fowler is a global marketing and sales leader with an extensive background in business-to-business and business-to-consumer services. She has worked and lived in South America and Europe and worked extensively in Asia. She has served as the Chief Marketing Officer in both start-ups and ongoing operations and has encountered and overcome significant business challenges. Barbara is a Partner with Chief Outsiders in Charleston, SC, and works with her clients as a part-time CMO, developing and implementing marketing strategies. She has taught at both the undergraduate and graduate level in schools including Rutgers University in Newark, NJ.
